Does managing a reserve or youth team fit in the definition of a manager?
Taking charge of a top team by an unknown manager is far from reality. That's why many players opt for lower league clubs when starting their career. But for some this isn't enough and would like to be able to begin even lower.

The beginnings of a managerial career aren't easy – probably only former well-known players can be employed by big clubs. The rest work they way up starting from managing reserve or youth teams. And that's what some people would like to see in Football Manager. Of course, it is now possible to manage both teams but only if we are the first team manager. Meanwhile, some would like to be an independent manager of a reserve team – they would like to begin their careers alongside more experienced managers, making their way to becoming the first team manager in the future.
However interesting the idea its realisation would require much work and many changes – for instance in the field of player transfers. Currently the first team manager takes charge of everything, and the FM itself, by adding a number of youth payers each season. If managing a youth team was to be enjoyable there should be an opportunity of selecting players for the team from a wider group. Youth competitions would have to be modelled much better.
Even more troublesome becomes the reserve team manager post. There are many debatable issues here. Should he be able to buy players intended to play for the reserves? Should he be able to renew contracts? These questions are crucial as, knowing the Sports Interactive policy, the player would have exactly the same possibilities as a virtual manager on the same post. And while being the reserve team managers we would like to be able to renew contracts with useful players, being the first team manager we wouldn't really like our assistant to renew contract with overpaid poorly-performing player which we have sent to the reserve team as a consequence of his poor form.
And what do they makers make of that? They are usually reluctant towards the innovations that are to give the player possibilities outside the competences of a manager, such as setting the prices of tickets. Can in this matter we expect a different approach? It turns out that yes – some, including Craig Hunter liked the idea. He said that although he finds it interesting it brings out more problems that it would seem at the first glance. On the other hand however, a couple of years age the same thing was being said about press conferences...
