How is bankruptcy presented in FM?
Money is an important issue which every club should always remember to take care of. Without cash a team cannot function properly and in real life can be even relegated by the football association. How does it look like in Football Manager?
Sports Interactive also tried to reflect that element of life in their product. Without a proper amount of pounds, dollars or euros, a manager will be sacked very quickly. The board looks at the results at first, but the next thing is the number of zeros on the club's account. Let's travel to Scotland for just a second. Most of you are probably familiar with the football reality, but a small remainder for those who are too lost in the world of Football Manager and have never heard of the team of Gretna. It is a team coming from a town of the same name that the club has got. In June of 2002 the team was allowed to participate in the Scottish Football League. Three years later the team won the Scottish Third Division getting the record for the number of points (98) and scored goal (130). A year later, a Second League team now managed to achieve another success in a form of reaching the the final of the Scottish Cup, in which they were beaten by Hearts. However, as a finalist of that competition they were allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup in the season of 2006/2007. Unfortunately, the success couldn't have gone on forever. The club started having financial issues, sold their players and was not even able to pay for healing their players' injuries. It was relegated and now no one knows if it will be permitted to participate in the Scottish Third Division or if it will rather disappear from the football map of the world.
Can a club be relegated due to their poor financial conditions in Football Manager? Such an option would be quite complicated to implement. In FM a team can be punished by a certain number of points being taken away from them by the national football association. Sometimes the clubs manages to motivate themselves and get out of the financial trouble. However, selling players and losing points usually ends up in relegation, just as in the case of Gretna. Once again Sports Interactive proves that they can reflect the football reality in the virtual world in their own creative way, that should satisfy all FM-maniacs.
