Just because 'national team's coach' should sound proud!
The possibility of leading the national team of any country is, in reality, an award given only to the best. In Football Manager when we decide to be national team’s manager we often do it along with leading our club. Why?
Of course it may look quite easy to make player choose, but this would not make the ‘hey, I am the national team manager’ sentence more prestigious. This just does not feel right, regardless of big number of improvements done in that matter over the years. The main problem seems to be the boredom. National team’s coach everyday activities are watching his players’ matches and… well, actually that is basically it. However, it appears that FM-maniacs have many ideas on how to improve this game option.
There is a need to get enough friendly games played before the important matches will come. Now it is only possible to do this on dates approved by FIFA, but what about other days? You surely know that our national teams, no matter the country, play several friendly matches outside that dates, just to make team’s understanding better or see more players in action. What’s more a change like that would make the game less boring since you would be able to do something more interesting than just clicking ‘continue’ between national team’s official games.
Still, playing friendlies is not too exciting, but if it would contain meeting with players and applying our training regimes it surely would be different. Imagine that we are able to plan few days before the match, including the tactical training and to observe our players’ form. Moreover it would be interesting if we would be able to make press conferences and to discuss our personal decisions with press.
Much can be done in terms of interaction with the footballers. In some cases, for example, that players get in conflict with those team managers, who no longer believe in their usefulness to the squads. We should be able to explain to a footballer in a few words why he did not get an appointment and what should he do to once again find himself in the team. This could work as a motivation for him, so that he would try to work harder in order to get back. Lack of form is often associated with an inadequate choice of club, where the main activity is cheering up teammates from the stands or sitting whole matches on the bench. The national team’s coach hint on how to develop one's career would be a good addition too. Another thing is inviting foreigners to play for us. Currently, the passports are being given automatically and you can call up a guy like this whenever you want to. In real world not everyone wants to play for us right away. This is when the possibility of talking with the player would come in. It would be possible to let him know our reasons and our plans related to him. The other thing is players who have played for one country at the youth level and now want to play for the other one. The option to ask the FIFA about cases like that would make us closer to the reality.
Another idea is to introduce the interaction with players’ club coaches, because that is the quickest way to get to know our player’s form. Such an option would be very useful for players, which we can not personally see in matches (ex. due to the fact that he is playing in the league that we did not choose at start of the game). This form of scouting player’s form would make us more certain that we make a good decision calling up this player and, what’s more, we would not call up players we are unsure of.
There are many more ideas, but it is up to the game creators to see if that options would be really useful. As Nick Habershon, one of the SI developers, have said, part of the proposals given by the players is reasonable and certainly is worth implementing in the game. We shall see how many of them will actually appear. I am that there is still much time to think of further ideas. So, what is your opinion? What would you like to see in the Football Manager 2010?
